Thousands enjoy Eid celebrations in Highbury Fields

THOUSANDS of people gathered to celebrate Eid al-Adha on Wednesday.

Six thousand people from across London came to Highbury Fields for an Eid celebration set up by Muslim Welfare House in Finsbury Park.

“Families from across London have come to share cultures and traditions from different countries,” said Toufik Kacimi, the founder of Muslim Welfare House.

“We invited the local churches to come along as well. We are bringing communities together and from different faiths to celebrate this day

Village unveils renovated sign featuring school pupil's winning design

On July 11, the community in Little London near Tadley unveilied their renovated sign in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Pamber Parish Council arranged for local artist Patsie O’Callaghan to renovate the sign, a large shield emblem, back to its former glory.

In 2000, the Parish Council launched a competition for pupils in local primary schools to design an image to be put on the front of the sign. The winner was Gemma Love, then a pupil of the Priory.

‘One Ash’ Exhibition in Andover: Everything made with one Ash tree

The Ash tree was felled in 2020 then the wood was distributed by Andover Trees United (ATU) to a group of artists with wide-ranging skills and talents in order to produce different creative outcomes. The purpose of this was to provide an insight to how imagination combined with natural products can generate extensive possibilities of creativity. Schools in the local area were able to work closely with Chapel Arts Studios to learn about forestry and the processes behind creating such exhibits.

The Petersfield School and Bohunt School in Liphook both made the decision to shut their doors on Monday and Tuesday while temperatures soar above 35 degrees. Eggar’s School in Alton has also decided to close after midday on both days.

Small businesses call for support after being hit by cost of living crisis

According to the Office of National Statistics, between 2015 and 2018 high street retail employment fell more than three-quarters.

The British Retail Consortium said that the start of 2022 saw the footfall on high streets decline by 24.2 per cent in January, 1.1 percentage points worse than December 2021’s rates and below the three month average decline of 22.2 per cent.

As recent as June 2022, there has been a continued depression of retail sales for the third month in a row.

The events, however, do not stop there. The much-anticipated return of the community procession will start at 4pm, with floats will leaving Weyhill Road and will continue through Beech Hurst, Bridge Street, High Street, Eastern Avenue and will reach Vigo Park at approximately 5.30pm.

Teenager who fought for her life during a crocodile attack shortlisted for bravery award

Amelie Osborn-Smith, 18, fought and escaped from a crocodile when she was attacked in the Zambezi river in Zambia last December.

She was white water rafting with her friends on her gap year visit to Zambia, where her grandmother owns a farm.

The approximately 10-foot crocodile grabbed onto her legs and dragged her into a death roll. Her friend took hold of her life jacket and the crocodile eventually let go.
